So you’re onto creating a tail huh? Well you’ll be happy to know that the tail is about the easiest part of your fursuit to make. It’s really just a tube stuffed with polyfill.
As usual, I’ll provide links below to materials and tutorials. I think you’ll see this one goes pretty quick.
A couple of quick notes.
- Don’t OVER-stuff your tail or it’ll be heavy.
- Instead of using elastic, use felt for the belt loops or some other fabric that doesn’t stretch.
- Pay attention to fur direction, especially for curly or twisting tails.
Materials
Required
Please note the links supplied here are simply SUGGESTIONS and you are welcome to substitute whatever products you feel appropriate. The only things you should avoid are things that can hold moisture like cardboard or other paper products, and low-quality fur.
- Something to stuff your tail with. This will depend on the style of
tail you want. - 1/2 – 1 square yard of high-quality faux fur depending on the size of your tail (more may be required if you have multiple colors) – Many people have gone with ‘Shannon Fabrics’ on Amazon (links below, more colors are available if you search). If they don’t have the colors you want, check out the links on this page: https://www.patchesthe.dog/index.php/crafting-a-fursuit-101-other-useful-resources/
- Felt for belt loops. 1 square yard will be MORE than you’ll need, but it’s cheap.
- Sharp scissors
- Utility knife (with extra knives or blades)
- Something to mark the fur (black Sharpies work well but could show through the fur depending on color and length. Be careful with colored Sharpies)
- Sewing pins
- Sewing needles
- High strength/upholstery thread (200 yards matching the color(s) of your fur)
- Scrap paper (for patterning)
Optional
- Fur trimmers/clippers
- Measuring Tape
